How the GMAT Focus score is calculated

The exam has three sections, each scored from 60 to 90: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. They count equally toward a total that runs from 205 to 805 in 10-point steps, so every total ends in 5. The GMAT Focus Edition guide covers the format behind those numbers.

GMAC does not publish how three section scores become one total, so no calculator can be exact. This one lays the sum of your section scores (180 to 270) evenly onto the 205 to 805 scale and rounds to the nearest total ending in 5: three 80s give an estimated 605, and three 85s give 705. It is the same mapping our full mocks use to report a total. Treat the result as an estimate; your official score report is the only exact number.

Percentiles are different: they are published. Every percentile on this page is GMAC's own figure from its August 2026 concordance tables, calculated from tests taken July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2026.

Quant and Verbal section percentiles

The same section score can rank very differently from one section to the next: an 80 is the 63.9th percentile in Quant and the 54.4th in Verbal. GMAC's concordance tables do not include Data Insights, because the old GMAT had no such section to compare with; your official score report shows that percentile.

Questions about GMAT scores

Each of the three sections (Quant, Verbal and Data Insights) is scored from 60 to 90, and all three count equally toward a total from 205 to 805. GMAC does not publish the exact conversion from section scores to the total, so any calculator, this one included, gives an estimate. Your official score report is the only exact total.

On GMAC's August 2026 table, a 645 is the 85.6th percentile, a 655 the 89.6th and a 705 the 97.5th. The median test taker scores between 555 (47.4th percentile) and 565 (50.4th).

A 645 or higher beats about 86 percent of test takers. What counts as good for you depends on your schools: check each program's class profile, because its published average matters more than any general cutoff.

Your official score report shows a percentile for every section. GMAC's concordance tables, which this page uses, cover the total, Quant and Verbal only, because the old GMAT had no Data Insights section to compare with.

By percentile: the two scales do not line up number for number. GMAC's concordance table links a 700 on the old exam to a Focus 645 to 655, and a 650 to a Focus 595 to 615.

Every year, in the third quarter. GMAC recalculates them from the last five years of tests. The figures on this page were published in August 2026 from tests taken between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2026.
